Melinda Sogo, Directory of Quality
October 20, 2022
Think of quality management as a logic problem.
That’s the key to Melinda Sogo’s approach. Much of quality management is about taking apart a regulation and figuring out how to meet its requirements in the most cost-effective way, she says. “It’s a logic problem: finding the intersection between the business objective of fulfilling the regulation and the cost.”
As logical as it sounds, though, quality was not Melinda’s initial career goal. Raised in a family of teachers and accountants, she envisioned a different path. In high school, she discovered science, and had thoughts of medical school. She found her talents resided more in research – “asking great questions and finding out answers no one else had” – than in patient-facing work.
Early in her career, she worked as a research scientist with Venaxis (formerly AspenBio Pharma, Inc.). She learned early on how to write research papers clearly and concisely, which led to writing procedures and technical writing, and into quality. Working for several companies in Colorado, Melinda has amassed almost two decades of experience in quality control, assurance and compliance – where, she says, she can effectively combine her skills as a scientist with those of a logician and data management expert.
At Boulder iQ, she’s diving right in, already working closely with clients. “I can help the team identify where we can make an improvement, helps others think about their jobs in a different way and help move us all to improvement,” she says.
Born in Kansas, Melinda spent her early years in Oklahoma, then moved with her family to Colorado at age 8 – and has been there ever since. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Northern Colorado, and then received her Master of Business Administration degree from American Intercontinental University (Schaumburg, Illinois).
When not at work, Melinda relishes time with her husband and soon-to-be 14-year-old daughter. She enjoys cross-stitch, reading and taking part in occasional fun runs.
